Most people affiliate electric golf carts with golf courses, however, over the past 10 years or so they have grown in popularity among those looking for eco-friendly transportation around their neighborhood and master planned communities. In fact, golf carts are starting to become legal on various city streets around the United States. While most golf carts are legally required to operate at speeds of 20 mph or lower, there are low-speed vehicles available that are allowed to operate at 25 mph.
In order to qualify as a low-speed vehicle, you must have headlights, stop lights, turn signal lights, taillights, reflex reflectors, parking brakes, rearview mirrors, windshields, seat belts, and vehicle identification numbers. This is a national law and we highly recommend looking into your state/city laws pertaining to Golf Carts and LSVs on public roadways.
Things to Consider when Buying an Electric Golf Cart
When determining if an electric golf cart is right for you, there are a few things to consider and question when purchasing:
What is the age of the golf cart?

- Just the like most things in life, the older the golf cart, the more potential problems you may face with it. We HIGHLY recommend always seeing the golf cart in person before purchasing if it is used or refurbished.
- Check the hours/cycles. Most golf carts that are 2005 and newer will track the hours and/or cycles (golf cart rounds) on the controller.
How old are the batteries?

- When shopping for refurbished or used golf carts, always be sure to ask what the age of the batteries are. Replacing batteries in an electric golf cart is going to be one of the more expensive parts of ownership. Depending on the voltage (36v, 48v, or 72v), a pack of lead-acid batteries can range from $800 to $2,000 - depending on the brand and size of battery/battery pack. As you can see, this may be more than the price you actually paid for the golf cart! That being said, the age of the batteries is crucial to the price so always be sure to ask before purchasing.
